LARGE PAINTINGS - 1995-2013
From 1995-2013 Ms. Paxton lived in Aquinnah, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, working exclusively on the Nature paintings. Birds, butterflies, fruit and flowers are symbols of the natural cycle of growth, decay and regeneration. Life's universal rhythms are explored through the use of these archetypes of nature and spirituality. Historic wallpaper, architectural motifs, fabric patterns, fragments of maps, vintage sheet music and gravestone rubbings evoke memory and the passage of time. Public and private spaces intermingle with an interplay between inside and outside environments. The quiet reflective moment is layered with the complexities of a world in constant flux. These paintings depict an elaborate mystical world. They juxtapose what can be known with what can never be known.
